Hawaii Kai Lions District 50 - Club Number 14324

August 2014 President’s Message

Published by Webmaster on

Aloha Lions and friends,

Here we are in August, already!  The Hawaii Kai Lions Club’s 2014-15 Board started off the new fiscal year with an Open House at JAIMS  in Hahaione valley on July 17th, combining a club meeting with a free dinner and presentation to eight potential members.  Our incoming Membership Director, Jeanne Alices, did a great job pulling together the event with help from others.  Thank you!  To keep, the ball rolling, everyone is invited to approach potential members to come out to a Hawaii Kai project or meeting, so we can increase our membership.  Later this year, we will also investigate the possibility of hosting another membership event, inviting former Kaiser Leos to join us.

On July 26th, several Hawaii Kai members attended the new District Governor, Jim Bryan’s first quarterly Cabinet meeting at Sacred Hearts Academy in Kaimuki.  We learned about Jim’s goals and ideas for the year, and look forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting down to work.  A few goals of my own are increasing membership, retaining members, and doing environmental  projects.  I am also interested in the 2014-15 Board’s goals, and what our long-time members are motivated to do.

I attended our first quarterly Zone meeting July 28th, hosted by Chair Richard Kaneko, and heard  his thoughts and direction, and learned what questions he wanted me to ask our membership.   I am excited to work with Richard and the other one clubs’ presidents and secretaries, to come up with a great project or activity this year.  We can also anticipate some fun, inter-club visitations and events under Richard’s guidance!

Looking ahead in August, on Tuesday the 5th, David Iwana, possible new member Eric Kimura, and I will volunteer at the Hawaii Convention Center for the 2014 National Medical Association’s Eye Health Screening.  Then on Thursday, August 7th, the Hawaii Kai Lions Club will have dinner and take a tour of the Hawaii Foodbank.  CISes, guests and other Zone clubs have also been invited.  Everyone is  asked to bring canned goods to the event.

On Thursday, August 21st, District Governor, Jim Bryan, and his CIS, Teresa, will visit the Hawaii Kai Lions Club.  Please come out to meet Jim and Teresa , and to hear Jim’s plan for the year!

During August, I intend to finalize the budget, fill any remaining Chair positions, designate two Lions to attend the January 2015 Leadership Institute, and to hold a  vote on the District Governor’s recent initiative to use Unrestricted funds to  encourage membership increases by way of a “rebate” program.   I’d also like to obtain feedback about Zone activity ideas, get input and make plans with the new Board, and to hear your thoughts for this year.  As my major travel for the year has now been completed, I look forward to getting to work for you, the Hawaii community, and the district.   Mahalo for your support!
