August 2018

Aloha Lions, CIS and friends,

Congratulations!  On July 6, 2018, members of our Hawaii Kai Lions joined by other Lion, Rotary Members and Stanley Chang (D, Hawaii Kai) witnessed Gov. David Ige sign Senate Bill 2087 into law.  This amended Hawaii’s Good Samaritan Law to include a liability exemption for persons who in good faith attempt to rescue a person with a rescue tube as well as for owners of property where they are located. Many thanks and admiration goes out to Lion Eric Kvick for his dream and passion together with his Co-Chair Dr. Bill Modglin and committee members Lions  Peggy Oyama, Joel Leo and David Iwana to see this come to fruition.  Also, thanks to those who made their voice heard as part of a grass-roots, citizen-led effort.

I also welcome everyone to Congratulate Lion Dr. Roger Ede for being awarded the incredible “Life Membership” award for his many Active Years of Service!

We held our first 2018 – 2019 Board Meeting in July. Mahalo to our energetic new Board Members that deserves special recognition:

We wish former Lion Marlene Arnett best wishes on her new ventures as a volunteer nurse with the Red Cross and the Hawaii Medical Corp. She mentioned enjoying the past year as a Lion.”

Let’s welcome and introduce ourselves to Lion transfer, “Appan” Ramamurthy Subramanian and CIS Niru.

Great appreciation to the following Chairs and Volunteers:

Lion David Iwana, Chair of Lunalilo Homes Golf Tournament. Coordinating set-up/break down, golfer registration, and Lions to witness specific holes.  This year we offered two shifts instead of working the entire 7 hour day.

Lion Cynthia Chun, Chair of International Youth Camp Hike at Diamond Head. Coordinating and responsible for taking 1st Aid Kit, providing food consisting of Subway Sandwiches, fruit and vegetable sticks.

We are always striving to make these volunteer events a fun and pleasurable one for our members as well as those we are helping.  Therefore, if you have suggestions and or comments after assisting at these events, please bring it up to your Committee Chair Person to bring it back to the club.  We would like to make improvements where necessary. “Sharing is Caring!”

Coming up on our August schedule are the following:

Friday, August 3 – Hawaii Lions Youth Camp Aloha Dinner International at Lanakila Senior Center.

Saturday, August 11, Heart & Stroke Walk, chaired by Jeanne Alices and Catherine Nurmi.

At the District 50 Hawaii Lions Cabinet Meeting held on July 28, conducted by District Governor, Bob Lee, the strong message came across to build membership enrollment to avoid increasing dues.  Let’s remain engaged and focused on inviting new members as we will be working on our Open House for potential members.

Mahalo fellow Lions to your dedication and caring nature for your Community and One Another to keep Hawaii Kai Lions one of the Best in Hawaii!

Aloha,

Lion President Sandy Gomes
