January 2019 President’s Message

Aloha Lions, CIS and friends!

As we reflect back on 2018, what an amazing year it was! We survived Big Island earthquakes, East-side torrential flooding and the loss of loved ones with the support and shoulders of friends and family. With the end of a Chapter a new one began, whether moving, relocating, an addition to the family, or reunions our lives revolve around those we trust and cherish.

For those that attended our Lions’ Christmas Party on Thursday, December 6 at “3660 on the Rise,” was that a PARTY or what?!  The meal was delectable, entertainer Sam Samonte was delightful, and the program was Fun & Cheerful!  I especially enjoyed celebrating Lion Richard Okamoto’s 100th Birthday!  Mahalo Secretary Cynthia Chun who baked a delicious prune cake with a Golf theme – so appropriate for an avid golfer.  Mahalo to Jackie Hayashibara, Lion Alvin’s CIS, for the pleasant surprise of garland leis.  Three cheers to our Chair Ed Lee, Co-Chair Kaz Nakano and MC’s David Iwana and Alvin Hayashibara and all those that helped to make a successful Magical evening!

Mahalo to Lion Peggy for capturing the heart warming photos of Santa Marty with the Kupuna at  Lunalilo Home and Caroling Lion members.  Thank you Santa Marty and H.K. Lions for the joy you bring to each and every Kupuna.  Special thanks to Lion Helen Morita for stepping up to assist in the meal fund collection during the absence of Lion Tamer Kerry Yoon.

If you haven’t already,  please check-out hawaiikailions.smugmug.com photos of Lunalilo Home and 3660 on the Rise events.  Lion Peggy Oyama and her CIS Loyal Merhoff really does an awesome job in taking photos and keeping the site current.

Kaiser High School was very appreciative of the H.K. Lions that assisted in their Mock Interviews for IB students.

The Boy Scouts Troop 101 appreciated the Lions answering to the Shout-Out for help at the 2018 Honolulu Marathon Aid Station.

Coming up at our next Lion Meeting on January 3rd the new Executive Director of the Hawaii Lions Foundation, Bob Armstrong will be introducing himself and getting to know our membership.

PDG Chris Tamura will visit us on January 17 to speak about Campaign 100.

I can’t express enough how very proud I am of our Hawaii Kai Lions Club Members and their CIS’ for all the time you contribute to serving your community and making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate and the welfare of the environment.  Also, Thank You to Lion Delwin Ching who makes the beautiful leis for our guest speakers throughout the years!

Have a Safe, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Lion President Sandy Gomes
