January 2020 President’s Message
Wow, I made it half way through what seems to have been a long but successful year! Thank you to club members for your support and giving your precious time to provide services to schools, vision and hearing screening, Lunalilo Home, e-Waste, pancake breakfast, Holiday Parade, and the community.
It took me several months to figure out what my responsibilities as President are with help of the Board and I’m still learning. We throttled down during the Christmas and New Year holidays and the year is coming to an end. I heard that the Lunalilo Home and Hawaii Kai Lions Christmas parties were fun and entertainment was enjoyable. Thank you to Ed Lee, Stan Ito, and Walter Kuroiwa for coordinating these events!
A new year is the perfect window of opportunity to reflect on what we’ve accomplished and prepare for upcoming challenges. As we enter a new decade some existing challenges remain such as building/retaining membership and finding interesting projects but the challenge is how to address them. The beginning of good things is always the hardest. We have enhanced some existing programs and started some new initiatives. We added Instagram to advertise the club more on social media, started updating Bylaws to conform to the current LCI version, and started to document Board positions to help incoming Board members.
On a sad note, we lost 2 Lions this year, Apolonio “Sindi” Sindiong and Keith Katsuda. I feel like our club members are like family, friendships have been built with “service to the community” as the bond that brings us together. Experts have said that providing service to others helps people live happier lives. So, I encourage members to come to projects and meetings and maybe bring a prospective Lion so they can join our happy family.
My new year’s resolution: be little more loving, be little more caring, be little more diligent, be little more kind, and be little more emphatic.
