November 2014 President’s Message

Published by Webmaster on

Hello Lions and friends,

Thanks for being such a great club, Hawaii Kai! I am thankful for a very hard-working Board and membership that show up for an array of volunteer projects, and who are pushing the envelope with new ideas and perspectives.

To recap, October has been quite a busy month, with vision/hearing screenings galore, new member and Leo inductions and installations , the Heart Walk, Hawaii Kai Strong meeting, Kamiloiki Carnival, CIS Tupperware party fundraiser, Zone party at Alvin Hayashibara’s house (thanks, Alvin & Jackie!), Leahi Hospital Halloween party with Servco, and the Nanakuli Health Fair.

PDG Merv Wee also put Raja Ram Pandey, a visiting Nepali Lion (doing a home stay on Lunalilo Home Road) in touch with me, and Raja has already attended several events. Please reach out to Raja and make him feel at home, and help him with any questions he may have. He will be with us for the whole month of November, so I am taking him to as many events as possible, as he is here to experience Hawaii and prep for next year’s international convention. His e-mail is rrpandeyjee@yahoo.com, and you can friend him on FaceBook. He is also temporarily added to our membership list, so that he can sign up for activities. Let’s show Raja some of our famous Hawaiian aloha!

Looking ahead to November, upcoming are: 11/6 club meeting with guest speaker Dr. Kuhio Asam from Lunalilo Home, 11/8 District Cabinet meeting at Sacred Hearts Academy, 11/9 rescheduled Moiliili Community Center painting/clean-up project, 11/10 Zone meeting at Niu Valley Middle School, 11/11 Veterans Day Parade in Wahiawa and Veterans Dinner at Barber’s Point, 11/13 Board of Directors meeting (at Peggy’s house), 11/14 Koko Head School Festival, 11/15 Hahaione School Fun Fair, 11/20 club meeting with prep for the Holiday Parade, 11/23 CIS Pampered Chef fundraiser, and 11/29 Holiday Parade.

In December, we have so far: 12/4 Lunalilo Home Christmas Party, 12/07 Ho’opono Christmas lunch, and 12/18 Hawaii Kai Holiday Party.

On a separate note, to keep you apprised of the 2015 Honolulu International Convention, and our work as Host Committee members (PDG Mervin Wee – Advisor, Ken Nishibun, Manpower Chair, and Peggy Oyama, Transportation & Hospitality Chair), here’s what’s transpired recently. India delegation visited in October. Had breakfast meeting with visiting French delegation on 10/11, sharing ideas and information. Had afternoon meeting with visiting Japanese delegation 10/21 and arranged local transportation 10/22. Press conference with Japanese delegation held 10/22. You may have seen TV and newspaper coverage that day. Belgian delegation is visiting Honolulu as I write this article today (11/01). In addition, your club’s representatives on the Host Committee attend 2 Host Committee meetings a month, as well as hosting their own sub-committee meetings. The press conference was the big public kick-off to promote our convention, and we will look to you, your CISes, families and friends for support! Finally, if you’re on FaceBook, please search for “Honolulu 2015 LCI Convention” to get the latest local postings on the convention. You can order the convention aloha shirt now – only 1,000 shirts will be made, so get your order in early! (Note: this is different from the volunteer shirt you will receive next year to wear as a volunteer.). Also, our convention website URL to remember is http://www.HawaiiLions2015.com. Please check it out regularly, if you don’t have Facebook. It contains information about the shirts and details about the Waterfront Jam convention fundraiser to be held Sunday, June 28th at The Shell, with tickets only sold in advance ($10 – $65) via the internet at http://www.waterfrontjam.com .

Mahalo, Hawaii Kai Lions, CISes and friends!

Lion President Peggy Oyama
