October 2015 President’s Message

Published by Webmaster on

Aloha Lions, CIS and friends of Hawaii Kai Lions!

Active, that’s how to describe the Hawaii Kai Lions! The past month was filled with great opportunities for community involvement. I always like to recap a few of these wonderful events/activities that we scheduled and participated in:

• 9/9 Hearing Screening at Wilson Elementary School
• 9/9 Manoa Lions Club Dinner with Coach Dave Shoji
• 9/15 Vision Screening at Wilson Elementary School
• 9/16 Vision Screening at Kaimuki Christian School
• 9/21 Vision Screening at Kuapa Preschool
• 9/24 Vision Screening at Hawaii Kai Preschool
• 9/30 Vision Screening at Kaimuki Christian School

As with the beginning of every school year, our screening activities will continue next month, so please stay engaged. These activities are making a definite impact on improving the quality of life in our community, especially for the youth. The most exciting moments came when we used our PlusOptix vision screening equipment for the first time. What a great success as the equipment performed fabulously, even with the operator learning curve! Once our screeners were trained, with only a few attempts to get the optics readings (yes, it was a bit frustrating at first), the average testing time per student was 8 seconds or less. We still needed plenty of Lions to assist in the facility set-up, staging/organizing the students, assisting the operators and retesting certain students using the eye charts. Modern times using wonderful technology!

October will be busy with more screenings and an opportunity to participate in the White Cane Walk sponsored by Ho’opono Services for the Blind. We are all about vision, so this walk around the State Capitol brings awareness to those who have vision impairments. Don’t forget the Keiki Karnival at Kamiloiki Elementary School on 10/23!

Just as a reminder, our October 1, 2015 meeting will be our Quarterly Business Meeting, so we will not have a guest speaker presentation that night. We will discuss future meeting programs and club activities/events that the membership may want to consider. These could include hearing from our community organizations and leaders, to health improvement issues, technology training, etc. In addition, other discussion could be any concerns you may have regarding past activities or how we might improve our club. All comments and suggestions are truly welcomed!

Always remember, a good and positive attitude is a good start and is greatly appreciated! Mahalo to all!

Aloha,

Lion President David Iwana
