Hawaii Kai Lions District 50 - Club Number 14324

September 2015 President’s Message

Published by Webmaster on

Aloha Lions, CIS and friends of Hawaii Kai Lions!

It’s been a very stormy, but exciting time in the islands! I hope everyone is prepared for any weather related emergency that hits our area. Even with the threat of wet weather, it didn’t even slow down our Club! Our members have participated in numerous Lions Clubs events in our community this past August:

• 8/1/15 – Zone International Youth Camp Diamond Head Hike
• 8/6/15 – Hawaii Kai Lions Open House
• 8/8/15 – Heart Walk Food Prep Booth
• 8/22/15 – Kapahulu Center Bon Dance Set-up

Check out the articles in this bulletin that describes the great times had by our Lions who participating in these activities.

Starting in September, Lions Clubs all over the island will be ramping-up their vision and hearing screenings. Pre-schools and elementary schools, both public and private, will be in the mix this school year. Lion Cynthia Chun has worked hard to schedule these schools, call her for more details. Our first opportunity for helping the youth by identifying potential hearing needs will be on September 9, 2015 at Wilson Elementary School, where we will be assisting the Koko Head Lions Club. After a few more joint Lions Clubs screening, we will hold our own Hawaii Kai Lions Club sponsored vision screening on September 21, 2015. By then, our new PlusOptix vision screening equipment will have been used at least two times. Exciting times!

Besides our screening activities, this month will also include an invitation by the Manoa Lions Club to join their September 9, 2015 meeting with guest speaker Coach Dave Shoji of the UH Wahine Volleyball team.

As we approach the Lions Clubs International Centennial celebration in 2017, I am reminded of the four community focus areas that our Hawaii Kai Lions are involved:

• Engaging our Youth – by sponsoring Kaiser Leos and Boy Scout Troop 101 and supporting our local schools.
• Sharing the Vision – by helping identify vision (and hearing) challenges that young school children may have by conducting preliminary screening and providing the results to the parents.
• Relieving the Hunger – our participation in food and donation collections every year for the Foodbank Hawaii, helps those who may have an immediate need.
• Protecting our Environment – we have assisted community environmental and ecological efforts as witnessed by our involvement with the Malama Maunalua.

Our Lions club should be proud of our continued involvement to ensure a bright future for generations to come.

Mahalo to all! Keep up the spirit!

Aloha,
Lion President David Iwana
